Nowadays, Turnov has a rich cultural life, sports-minded people can also find pleasure here, and you can also relax in the beautiful countryside. Cycling and hiking trails in Bohemian Paradise

The Bohemian Paradise combines a variety of natural beauties with rich historical monuments – castles and chateauxes The extraordinary landscape with its characteristic sandstone rocks, flora and fauna communities were the main reason for the designation of the first protected landscape area of the Bohemian Paradise in the former Czechoslovak Republic (1955). In terms of landscape diversity and the presence of protected and endangered biological species, not only the deep forests, but also the systems of ponds and streams and the fragments of wetland ecosystems are important. The characteristic rocks, which form landscape landmarks (Trosky, Kozákov, Mužský, Vyskeř), add to the unique atmosphere. Therefore, the main symbol of the Bohemian Paradise is an area called Trosky with the ruins of a medieval castle, unmistakable from afar by its silhouette.

The total length of the trail is 103 km, but you can take only the part that interests you.

Bohemian Paradise Geopark

If you are interested in the geological history of the Earth, you should take a trip to the Bohemian Paradise Geopark. You will be amazed by the incredibly beautiful nature and you will also learn a lot of new interesting things.

The UNESCO Bohemian Paradise Geopark is a unique area with a unique concentration of geological and geomorphological phenomena, paleontological, archaeological and mineralogical sites. It provides a picture of the geological history of the Earth and at the same time demonstrates the importance of natural conditions for the economic and cultural development of human society over many millennia. Due to its extremely valuable natural, geological and landscape values, the Bohemian Paradise Geopark was included in the European Geoparks Network in 2005 and in 2015 and is the only one in the Czech Republic to become a member of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network. The territory of the geopark has been repeatedly the bottom of seas and lakes over hundreds of millions of years, volcanic activity has taken place here several times. The result is a landscape with rocks, volcanoes, karst phenomena, rivers, romantic valleys, forests, meadows and ponds.

Trosky Castle

The bizarre ruins of a Gothic castle, built at the end of the 14th century by the Lords of Vartenberg, has become the main symbol of the entire Bohemian Paradise. The Baba and Panna towers offer a beautiful view of the picturesque landscape of Bohemian Paradise and the surrounding areas.

Originally a Gothic castle, Trosky was founded in the 14th century on top of a bizarre basalt outcrop. The construction of the castle on two steep basalt cliffs made Trosky an impregnable castle – even the Hussites failed to conquer it.

Climbing and climbing walls

If you love rocks and climbing, you’ve come to the right place. There are several places to climb in Turnov and its surroundings, both climbing walls and actual cliffs and rocks. There is a sports hall in Turnov that runs an artificial climbing wall, but you can also choose other physical activities. There is a climbing wall in Svijany, where you can then go bowling. In Malá Skála you can visit the Žlutá plovárna center or the climbing wall in the school grounds, and for the experienced climbers there is the Suché skály climbing area and Vranovský hřeben.

Ruins of Vranov Castle – Pantheon

If you like castles and ruins, don’t forget to go to Vranov. It rises high above the Jizera River, near Malá Skála. You can reach it on foot, following the red hiking trail.

At the time of its construction, the castle met all defensive requirements, as a group of sandstone cliffs tilted almost vertically on all sides into the Jizera valley were used for its construction. According to the notches and grooves in the rock walls, it can be judged that the residential buildings at Vranov were mainly wooden, and therefore only the cellars carved into the rock have been preserved. The castle was entered through two fortified gates. On the highest rock, there was a wooden castle tower which dominated the whole building.
